David is the former Chief Financial & Strategy Officer for Millennium Physician Group based in Fort Myers, Florida. When he joined Millennium in 2010, the group was a strong performer in the volume-based practice of primary care. As the strategy leader for the group, David identified opportunities in the emerging value-based reimbursement system for primary care. The group formed an Accountable Care Organization (ACO) in 2012 and became a participant in the Medicare Shared Savings Program in 2013. Millennium earned a shared savings award in each of its first three years in the MSSP program and today operates three ACOs providing cost-effective, quality care to more than 75,000 patients covered by Medicare and commercial payers.
Koeninger left Millennium in early 2017 to form Physician Healthcare Transitions, a consulting practice advising physicians on strategies to implement and participate in value-based programs.
Koeninger has more than 40 years of experience in financial, accounting and operational management. He was Executive Vice President & CFO of 21st Century Oncology, a Fort Myers-based developer and operator of radiation therapy clinics for ten years, beginning in 1998. He was EVP & CFO at the time of the Company’s initial public offering in 2004, and remained in that capacity until his retirement in 2007.
Koeninger’s experience includes working as an operational and financial executive for Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and its predecessors. Koeninger is also a certified public accountant, and began his career in Cincinnati, Ohio with Ernst & Young CPAs. He holds a Master of Accountancy degree from Virginia Tech and completed his bachelor’s degree at Eastern Kentucky University.
