Faridah Awang with Jack Dyer

EKU's School of Business is pleased to announce the recipient of the Eighth Annual Jack L. Dyer Excellence in Teaching Award. The recipient for 2010-11 is Dr. Faridah Awang, Associate Professor of Corporate Communication and Technology.

The Selection Committee, consisting of Dr. Peggy Brewer, Dr. Jan Colbert, and Dr. Ed Davis (Chair), stated that "Dr. Awang’s commitment to excellence in the classroom is supported by her consistent high evaluations from her students, peers and department chair."

Students recommend Dr. Awang very highly. "Dr. Awang is a phenomenal professor. She is so passionate and concerned with us and how we are doing. I definitely took advantage of her availability. She was so helpful. Dr. Awang is a very positive and upbeat professor but still challenging and requires a lot," said one student. Another student commented, "I think Dr. Awang is one of the best professors at EKU. She really cares about her students and wants to see them learn and progress."

Highly regarded among her peers, just a few of their remarks include; “Dr. Awang has excellent perception of students’ abilities. She reflects on the effectiveness of her teaching strategies.”

“Lecture, demonstrations and projects keep students involved. Dr. Awang uses a variety of teaching techniques.” “She is very good with students; students like Dr. Awang."

According to her department chair Dr. Lana Carnes, “One of Dr. Awang’s strengths in teaching is her desire and ability to bring real-world problems and cases into the classroom. Students in her classes have developed classroom projects including websites and databases for regional businesses and nonprofit organizations. What better way to teach our students than involving them in active learning in the business world.”

Dr. Faridah AwangI'm very honored to receive this award when there are so many excellent teachers in the School of Business.  It's so inspiring when students struggle with the subject matter and finally realize that 'aha!' moment.  The moment when they have the capability to master complex problems and the ability to apply that to their personal and professional lives.  In my 23 years of teaching in the United States and abroad, nine of them here at EKU, I enjoyed building relationships with my students and peers.  You learn so much from each other - how to be a better teacher, facilitator, colleague. - Dr. Faridah Awang

The School of Business will formally recognize Dr. Awang during the annual Jack L. Dyer Excellence in Teaching Award Luncheon on August 18, 2011.  We are proud to have quality professors such as Dr. Awang and pleased to recognize her for her efforts.

Congratulations to Dr. Faridah Awang for being selected as the recipient of the Jack L. Dyer Excellence in Teaching Award for 2010-11!
