EKU Students Attend IMA Leadership Conference
On November 10-12, 2016, six EKU students attended the Institute of Management Accountants Student Leadership Conference (IMA SLC) in Detroit, Mich. The conference is an annual event that offers opportunities for tours of local industries, workshop sessions, and networking. This year’s conference was attended by over 700 students, faculty members, and industry representatives.
EKU students attending found the conference to be quite valuable. They describe their experiences as “educationally beneficial…as well as fun and enjoyable” and “a total success.” Highlights of the experience included the tour of Quicken Loans headquarters, networking with business executives and students from other schools, inspirational speakers, and learning about the management accounting profession.
Trish Isaacs, Associate Professor of Accounting, who also attended the conference, commented that, “IMA provides a wealth of resources and support for accounting and finance students, and it was great to see our students take advantage of this opportunity. They networked with industry representatives and other students, and were inspired by workshop speakers. They returned to campus with renewed enthusiasm for their professional development and for their career paths in management accounting and finance.”
When asked what they would say to students who might attend next year, one of the students responded that, “the only thing I would say is ‘go'.” Another said, “If you have the opportunity to go, absolutely take it.” Common themes in their responses were to “get out of your comfort zone” and “take advantage of every opportunity for learning and fun that the conference provides.”
Students’ travel to the SLC was funded by a generous contribution from EKU Accounting alumnus Gayle McCroskey and her husband Robert, also an EKU alum. Their support made it possible for these students to attend IMA SLC.
