Inaugural Ethical Meme Contest Slated for November

Compass, confront oneself

Memes have become prominent content created by online users and shared rapidly throughout social media networks. Often times brands, organizations, and individuals create these memes to form an emotional response from viewers. These often involve images from popular images from pop culture.

With these being a common form of communication among online users, Eastern Kentucky University Instructor and Lab Manager, Mike Hawksley, envisioned having a contest where students create memes to promote ethical behaviors. This is a great opportunity for students to create marketing content that they could add to their professional portfolios as well as for them to share online and get others to choose ethical behaviors in their daily lives.

Submissions should incorporate this year’s theme Confront Oneself: Develop a Moral Compassand/or the Ethics Awareness Week Principles which include Honesty, Integrity, Respect, & Responsibility.

Students are able to submit memes they have create to promote ethical behaviors until the deadline of Tuesday October 29th at 11:59pm. All submissions should be sent to Assistant Professor of Marketing, Dr. James Blair, at james.blair@eku.edu. Top submissions will be notified on Wednesday October 30th.

Finalists will have 60 seconds to present their meme to judges and an audience of students, faculty, staff, and community members. They can explain how their meme is effective in promoting ethical behaviors and how they would promote their content online.

This year’s Ethical Meme Contest will be held at Eastern Kentucky University on Monday November 4th starting at 5:30p. Marketing instructors from several local universities, including Eastern Kentucky University, are planning on having students submit to the contents. These universities include Alice Lloyd College, Asbury University, Berea College, Campbellsville University, Union College, University of Kentucky, and University of Pikeville. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three students from the contest as well as certificates honoring their accomplishment.
